I was recently reading a thread on another forum about tap water in Spain. The original poster asked if it was "safe" to drink the water in Spain, but as the thread progressed, one of the posters, who is from Barcelona, mentioned that it is illegal to serve tap water in Spain. On our last visits, we have always asked for "agua del grifo", but perhaps we shouldn't, not because it isn't safe to drink, but to avoid getting the restaurant in trouble. Anyone know about this law and if it applies throughout Spain and if it is enforced?

Some "locals" probably ask for "agua del grifo" in areas where they have a good source of spring water. They will be used to drinking the local water but visitors to Spain would not be, so the safest thing to do would be to ask for bottled water.
Not sure what the law is though!

They absolutely do serve tap water, or at least most do. Same goes in bars. It does seem that some restaurants have a "policy" not to serve tap water, only bottled water, however. The tap water in Spain, for the most part, is very good and meets high quality standards.

Some say the water in Barcelona should be avoided whenever possible and maybe even in the smallest of villages. I'm sure there's no such law against serving tap water. If there is, as you said, it certainly isn't enforced.

Absolutely you can drink tap water in Spain. That is a general answer.
Then, as in many places you need to know the water in some towns are worse than others;Barcelona is drinkable too ,have many friends there, its just the place where you are eating.....

As to legal, nothing of such. You ask for it and that is it. Then , we have the cool restaurant that wants to be trendy and might refuse you the tap water, so its still a free country, you just move on.

Cheers
