As MM got his license I came across this article in El Confidencial newspaper that I follow on driving in Madrid. OF course in Spanish, but I think most if not all here could read it.

http://www.elconfidencial.com/espana/201...-centro_209230/

basically 2% of cars will be able to drive in Madrid where the traffic increases and the accidents as well.

OMG! Madrid is overloaded !!! quick to Retiro.

yes take away traffic business suffers. but hey now they would take their cars to Corredor instead, great ride love to shop there in Torrejon.

Ah thos motorbikes guys, hahaha!

and yes , that is another one on top of the loss of business, the folks that insist on going by there will have more fines, only for the govt of Madrid thought.

let's see how the new regulations work if implemented.

Does the proposal also ban taxi cabs?
Does it supply car parks (lots) for commuters?

The area is huge for a vehicle ban - and must offer some method of transportation other than the metro or foot.

For the visitor Madrid is best seen and enjoyed on foot. This simply isn't true for the residents and people commuting for work and/or business.

yes indeed of course, it is more a bother for the resident. They are already moving out to go shopping in the big ones outside, so this law if implemented will mean the end to many small shops there.

Corredor is a park I used to go a lot and go there when visiting . near the old US Air Force base of Torrejon de Ardoz.

Puna, I haven't read the article yet, but I'm rather certain the "car ban" would be as it is in/through the Puerta del Sol where ONLY taxis, buses, residents with windshield stickers, and delivery vehicles (during certain hours) can circulate in this area.

Saludos, MadridMan

I go around most of them, Madrid is welcome to the club of city center banners....
like London's congestion charge
http://www.tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/congestion-charge

and many cities in Roma the ZTL zones

http://www.agenziamobilita.roma.it/index...168&lang=en

Paris is thinking about it but for now only better lanes for cyclists....lol!

Get your pedal to the metal and rock yeah ::)

If this is correct, I think it makes sense. I only had a cursory look at the map in the article - and the area looked far larger than strictly Puerta del Sol. In reality, banning cars there and in the rest of the historical and heavily congested areas immediately adjacent seems reasonable - from an economic aspect as much as to counter some of the noise and pollution.
