The employees sometimes ignore you, but if you seek them out and speak Spanish they are quite helpful. There are always a lot of them around. When strolling around Madrid I like to carry my belongings in an El Corte Ingles bag,I see a lot of locals doing that. I think this helps me appear as less of a tourist. I really like the movie EL CRIMEN PERFECTO, by Alex de La Iglesia starring the great Guillermo Toledo. I took it to be a bit of a satire about El Corte Ingles. I once encountered Goya Toledo and tried to break the ice with her by asking if she was related to Guillermo, was unsuccessful. I have become acquainted with a couple of Spanish actresses through the AMERICAN CINEMATEQUE in Hollywood. More later.

yes, well I wear clothing and my suitcase is from there so nice blend even here ::)

yes many movies over the years have been done with some cut or reference to it, like I said it is an institution in Spain.

There are over 11 million cardholders of El Corte Inglés, me included ::)
I even saw their store in Lisbon,Portugal!
Cheers

I didn't mean a suitcase I'm talking about the plastic bag they give you to put your purchases in, I t has EL CORTE INGLES written on it over and over, a lot of people on the metro carry their lunch or book or whatever else in it.

Here's an excerpt from my 2009 blog entry, "It's All About the Bag":

Quote:
The usual bag of choice is the famed white with green, two-handle, thick-plastic El Corte Inglés bag with the pleated bottom. Choosing this bag tells the public, “Look! I do my shopping at El Corte Inglés. I’m not some commoner, don’tchaknow!” Others really pushing the self-image envelope might choose a Mongo or even Zara bag to say, “Hey! I’m into fashion!”, or some another bag from some other fashion line with which I’m certainly not familiar so I won’t attempt to be falsely knowledgeable here.

Saludos, MadridMan
