Yesterday, drove from Barcelona to Pamplona with a stop at Belchite along the way, mostly on the big highways. Was a very easy drive, especially with built-in GPS and a six speed transmission. One note: these highways are toll roads and the tolls are quite steep, compared to the USA. Worth every Euro, because the roads are smooth with plenty of rest stops for snacks, fuel, and bathrooms along the way. Friendly people at the toll booths as well, but some are automated so keep cash and coins with you to make it easy.

A great ride and looking forward to more.

Today drove to Santillana del Mar. Plenty of ocean views along the coast road. Very nice scenery.

Drove to Oviedo today. Another great stop. Hotel has a spa. What a wonderful way to wrap up the day. Easy driving today. A short stretch of construction then smooth ride. More to come soon.

Puna,

Thanks for the invite. I wasn't planning a book, but have often thought about writing a book about my travels in Spain. It would kind of be "an American in Spain" type of thing.

At any rate, I have lots of impressions so far. It was my first time in Barcelona, and I must say, it reminded me of certain parts of New York City. My hotel was in an upscale area... so it felt like the Gramercy Park area. I noticed the "cafe society" in full bloom. People out for lunch or supper, dressed very well, eating very well, enjoying themselves. Bad economy or no, this crowd had the cash to live well. Then on the beach area, was a bit more low-key, yet still a sort of "good live" vibe. I noticed lots of spoken English by visitors and natives. It was surprising to me, then again, not in such a cosmopolitan place with visitors from around the world. The old city seemed overrun by the cruise ship invasions and all the crass commercialism that goes with it.

Just my first gloss on this topic. Probably more to follow and I'll put them up with my other posts on restaurants, hotels, and such, that will all be coming soon.

This roam about Spain has been another great education.
