It must have been a very intense time right after Franco died, with everyone wondering what would happen? What way would the country go? I must confess, that although I was in university at the time, the USA had it's own troubles then and I was not very aware of what was going on in Spain

Hmmm! _ I ave mixed feelings about Juan Carlos! I don't quite understand how he was chosen thengroomed by Franco to replace him!
Furthermore from what I have read/heard, the coup was staged to give the king an opportunity to establish credibility in the hearts of the Spanish people............
The queen is a saint to have put up w/him and his affairs for so many years!

be glad you can come to Spain and speak like that ,during the previous govt you won't be allowed to speak like this. They would whip you with bats, the guardia civil.

I lived in Spain from 1968-70 so am very familiar how life was then.
I have talked to many Spaniards and know of the many atrocitiess committed during and after the civil war. Families are today trying to get compensation for lost family members.Mass graves are still being found.
This horror does not go away but explain to me how Franco chose to bring back the monarchy and what deal was made for Juan Carlos to accept the deal and live in Spain while Franco was "educating" him?
How did the Spanish feel when they saw this unfolding?
Juan Carlos is an old goat and finally was put out to pasture.
How do explain the on going corruption that even involved the kind's daughter and son in law? Now the king is going to get immunity.....This blatent corruption has finally led to the dreadful economic situation in Spain today?

well Crisco if you read above the thread you may know my story. I did not hear from Spaniards I was one of them. I know the whole story ; been part of the underground cell 27 of Madrid.

I participated not just read or hear from someone. The stories can be cloudy hearing it from others.

the daughter the cousin the wife, the economy (you know he is not government but a King just like the UK) has nothing to do with the politics and constitution he gave Spain so you may speak like this. Be respetful of the rights you were given now in Spain, it is all due to him our King.

The vast majority of Spaniards approve it, they approve a monarchial parliamentary constitution in a democracy and the new king was approved by 89% of the Cortes coming from a cross section of the country. That is democracy that this old king gave Spain.

Enjoy it
