Can anyone recommend an apartment rental in Barca city center (Old Town) for a couple of weeks in February? Friends will be visiting; he for business and she to explore and indulge in the wonderful city. It seems the place they booked has gone incognito and, while I've explained it is still holiday time in Spain my friend is beginning to panic. Thanks!

A friend sent me a link www.vrbo.com there are some lovely apartments in Barcelona listed there. They are a bit high priced, but the pictures look inviting.

We are also looking to rent an apartment in Barcelona this summer. After doing lots of reading, I found this disturbing article:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-...g-tourists.html

Has anyone heard about this new law? Any idea what it will mean for tourists?

The Daily Mail can be a bit of a scare-mongerer but this does look genuine on the face of it . That will limit a lot of money going into those countries as people in Europe choose other holiday destinations . I think France and Spain would be cutting off the hand that feeds them . When I'm in Madrid on vacation I normally stay at hostales but if I ever considered going with a group of people I would have looked for an apartment to spread the cost .

this rental thing is nothing new, there are laws here just like there are laws in my old new York city. Apartments not registed as vacation rental should not be rented out or face conséquences.
apartment that are furnished but listed in the fiscal book as unfurnished to pay less taxes will face conséquences, if there is enough inspectors lol!

When you book from a site like homelidays or others you are renting from owners, so buyer beware, you need to book apartment that are rented for what they were intended. I do rent a lot with homelidays and never a problems last rented for two weeks in Rome flawless beauty.

and I with large family have been renting for a long time over 20 years.
Cheers

Have you ever used "Rentalia"? They are Madrid based, but rent flats all over Spain. Their prices seem much more reasonable than some of the others.

What I think is that anybody having a second home and wishing to rent it out would maybe go underground . That's to say they would rent the apartment or house out with a cash-in-hand payment . The agreement with the people renting it would be that they are friends and that the owner had let them stay there for free . That way there is no record of rental ( unless investigated ) and the owner gets cash-in-hand without the tax authorities being involved . I know for absolutely certain that that happens in Madrid . Landlords will ask for rent to be paid in cash so that there are no bank transfer records that the tax authorities can trace .

It happens everywhere and frankly, IMO, if both the landlord and the renters have been vetted, makes economic sense from both their perspectives.

My friends fell in love with Barca. Just posted the source they used to locate the flat rental. Their comments:

"We rented a small studio apartment for 60 euros per night. Laundromat right around the corner; across the street from Mercat de Santa Caterina where you can buy any kind of food you can think of; and two blocks from the Catedral de Barcelona."
