Hi ,

I am a teacher working in Madrid, and would like to use the Spanish Health service, see a doctor, get a prescription, etc.

As I'm working and my Social is (apparently) being paid by my school, do I need a health card to go to a doctor, or is just my passport and Social Security number ok?

If I need a Spain Health card, how do I get one? My appointment for NIE isn't until mid-June!

well it says on the site I poste it for foreigners (assuming you do not have legal residency yet) you can get it with a passport for UE residents and your permit of residency if not EU .you go to your health center nearest you in Madrid , and will give you the health card to those living legally there and with low resources or with coverage from another country.

As it is legalise stuff, it is better to go with the minimum of information and ask them directly to constitute your file and application. You will be given a file to complete and return and they will mail the card to your place of residency there.

If you tell me where you are at like barrio in Madrid I can tell you where is the nearest health office to do so .Hope it helps.

Thing is I need to see a Doctor for a consult and to get a prescription, but I am hoping to get free care under my EU citizenship so don't want to go without being sure it'll be free...

you will be covered with your UE citizenship, have you an EE11 card from the UK or proof of social security coverage from UK? You show that and you should be covered.
I get it from France when there for my kids and now there is a CEAM in english its the European health insurance card, your UK social security office issued it.
Otherwise go to the nearest health office you have at centro de servicios sociales Gallur right there in Laguna at CALLE GALLUR, 24 metro Laguna.
They should be able to direct you or help you better;hope it helps
