Anybody travelling in Spain in the next few weeks should be aware that the air traffic controllers are voting to strike today . The hardest hit would be Madrid , Barcelona and Islas Canarias . The government , apparently , have contingency plans to bring in the military but there could be disruption . It´s worth keeping an eye on the news .

Just received the following message:

"Spanish air traffic controllers' union [v dishy] spokesman says 'if there is a strike, it'll be after Aug 16, most probably 18 or 20' '. Other air traffic controller union rep (not so dishy) saying they want improved work/safety regulations on par with Brit counterparts"

Its the year of the strikes in Spain. It goes with the economy, and all demanding more. Hope its just scare tactics and it end up been nothing on the strikes.
Good luck if you travel in those dates.

The airline unions promised not to strike during the month of August , but will continue negotiations with airport management . There is the possibility of strikes in September .
European trade unions are very agressive and will not hesitate to stage wildcat strikes . To be honest , I was surprised ( and relieved ) that they decided not to strike during this month ... probable reason is that most of THEM don´t want THEIR holiday plans disrupted !!!

Word on the street is there will be a "general strike" in all of Spain on 29 September. Great. Wonder how far-reaching that'll be and who all will participate.

Ruh-Roh, Raggy! More air-travel problems for Spain soon.

According to The Telegraph (thanks, Sally!):
Quote:

Airport walkouts threaten holiday chaos for millions
Millions of airline passengers face months of disruption after Spanish airport workers announced plans for a series of strikes.

The walkouts, starting in the run-up to Easter, would ground hundreds of flights and wreck the holiday plans of families hoping to grab some spring sunshine.

22 days of strikes are planned, starting on April 20 and continuing through May and June until the end of July.

They could coincide with further industrial action by British Airways cabin crew, who are being balloted on strike action by the Unite trade union.

The Spanish dispute involves 12,500 ground staff employed by Aena, the state-controlled airports authority, which has been earmarked for privatisation.

It threatens to shut down nearly every airport in the country, including those in the Canary Islands, a particularly popular destination at Easter.

yes privatization is on all over Europe. The smallest airports are doing that already here. I hope they dont do that ,they will lose at the end, its inevitable.
