One more question for the all knowing members of this board:
I am trying to buy tickets on the renfe site, I notice there is a box marked open return. If I click this box does it mean that I will get the roundtrip price but I can select my return departure time on the date of my return? I am planing to make some day trips out from Madrid and I am not sure how long I will want to spend in these other towns, this seems like a good option if I understand it correctly.
Thanks for all your help!

I agree the bus is always better for me anyway, try La Sepulveda to Segovia http://www.lasepulvedana.es/SEG2/index.html

If you do go to Segovia , Iīd recommend a place to stay . Itīs cheap and simple but has a nice bar . Itīs literally 2 steps away from the cathedral square . Donīt expect luxury ! This an hostal .. But I loved it and will be going back soon . Itīs clean and central . Hotel Restaurante San Miguel . Calle Infanta Isabel 6 . I went to Segovia without accommodation and found this place by luck ! Steve

That place looks really nice Steve, I'll definitely try and book there when we go to Segovia next
