So, I just realized that 10 Feb is Ash Wednesday...will places be closed? Specifically I will be in Madrid and was planing on going to the palace. On a related note, do I need to be worried about related to Mardi gras?

From what I can see , and I´ve been to the Palacio Real a few times , they may be open on public holidays but only until 2pm . Religious holidays are becoming increasingly diluted here , but the church still has influence , and the link between the church and the monarchy is strong . The cathedral ( next door to the palace ) will be open for mass ( misa ) and is definitely worth a visit ( It´s free too ! )

All places will be opened. Ash wednesday isn't a public holiday.
