I love markets !!! Especially from a photography point of view ... The new , updated market looks great ! .. OK it´s a little bit sanitized .. but give it time ! It needs to settle down .
La boquéría in Barcelona is very very smart but one of the bes markets in Spain .. Certainly has some of the best restaurants .. El Quim de la Boquería is astounding ! And they cook right there in front of you in the middle of the market .
I had an amazing "marisco" feast there .. lots of flames and passion in that open air kitchen .. Almost un espejo ( A mirror ) on España ( and Catalunya of course ) . Passion for life .
There´s a great market just behind Gran Vía .. maybe someone can help me with the name .. My landlord almost ordered me to go there ! It´s completely South American .. I went at 9am and it was just an explosion of colour ! That combined with Latino music , and huge Paella pans cooking rice and chicken ( at 9am ! ) , guys sitting at the bar in the market , under the Ecuadorian flags , drinking beer .
I joined them ...!! It was a great experience .

Mercado de San Miguel located just off the west side of the Plaza Mayor in Madrid is a favorite place. It's been remodeled since the last time I was in the city, all for the better. Every food imaginable is here, including oysters on the half shell which can be purchased by the piece and eaten right there. All the usual things from seafood, meats, vegetables, breads and so forth.

My wife and I enjoyed the people watching, too, as locals and visitors crammed in to do their shopping and/or have a snack. We had a very nice glass of wine and a couple of tapas from the various vendors.

It's a great place to take a break while exploring that area.

I recommend, a sweet vermouth € 1.50 and a tapa of olives 2€...wonderful

jazz, can you get that at the Mercado de San Miguel? If so, at which bar?
