The STANDARD of living in Madrid is probably very very similar to the standard of living in Paris. The COST of living in Madrid is probably just a little less than in Paris. But the SALARIES in Madrid (or Spain) are certainly MUCH MUCH LOWER than in Paris/France. There's a huge disparity these years concerning the cost of living (and the price of houses) and the salaries offered. MUCH has been debated on this topic, demonstrations, strikes, etcetera but the fact remains that the salaries are medievally low here in Spain. I think that many factory workers in France (or in the USA) make more money than medical doctors here in Spain - just to give you an idea. Doctors don't live fancy lives here. And more and more Spanish doctors are leaving Spain for higher salaries elsewhere. Surgeons and Specialists, however, do live much better. But the salaries in Spain appear low to you in your field - and I'm sure they are. So many times people from the UK or USA email me saying they'd love to move to Spain. But upon finding out how much a similar job here pays they most often change their minds because it's (nearly) HALF of what they were making in their home countries. For job offers/salaries uou could look into http://www.Monster.es - the only site which comes to mind. I'm not familiar with standard of living comparisons, however. Best of luck! It'd be great to have you back in Spain. Saludos, MadridMan

Thanks,i just pull the latest from UBS swiss bank standing of cost of living, and it does shows Madrid and Paris fairly close, Paris 9 Madrid 24, wages factor Paris 62,5 Madrid 50,7 ,they run the gamut on all comparison from hairdressers to electronics, in all its true what you are saying, everything seems to close but the salaries are 72% of they are in Paris.less taxes in Madrid thus. its a good start, I will keep an eye on it. The interviews are in progress so will see if they come to bear what they say and what I have found by them. A+

The Spanish fall into two categories. Those who bought before the boom and those who didn't. Young people survive by either living at home until they're mid 30's or they live in a shared apartment.
Average wage in Madrid, 1000 a month, average rent 900 ouch!
As an aside house prices would have to fall by 70% to be affordable by the average Spaniard.

just to update, i made to Madrid early December ,and met with local friends and professionals in my field FINANCE; the reality is that I was thinking of maybe moving back to Madrid (live in the 1970's another era), well even thus the food and media prices were lower than Paris, the food was lower period, the housing is almost the same ,expensive, and the salaries wowwwww!!! you are talking easily 20K to 30K less for the same job!!! Do not know how they survive with that equation? I am with professional recruiters who eagerly tells me i can offer you X, but when I say what I make here, they shrug,oh well.... Needless to say, i think for now i just visit ::)
