Can anyone recommend a good cheap hostel in New York. I will be going there mid December and am staying 4 nights before heading off to Barcelona.

You could try the Y, but I recommend the Larchmont Hotel in Greenwich Village. You can stay there for under $100 per night, including breakfast. It's fabulous.

I stayed at (one of the) the New York City YMCA about 20 years ago - had a tiny room and the bathroom/shower down the hall. I remember it was about $38/night even then and we had a nice view from the 15th floor.

Message board member replay posted a review of a hotel at which he stayed a bit more than a year ago. The bathroom was "shared" but the location was good, room was clean, and it was inexpensive. Maybe it was the Larchmont Hotel but I'm not sure. You coudl conduct a SEARCH of this World Travel Forum category to find it, I'm sure.

Hi everyone! Sorry for putting this in a hostel thread but I'm a little scared of starting new ones because of my obvious tendency to provoke some users, so I thought this would do.

Now I need help from New Yorkers or people who know the area well: I'm doing a 3 month internship there until mid-June and living in Brooklyn, and I would love any advice on what to do, where to go and how to do it without spending a fortune

I'd especially love some tips on how to get to know the hispanic cultures - and of course where to get some decent fresh corn tortillas and tacos!
