Oh!, by the way, sorry, but the name of the street is Lope de Vega like that of the famous Spanish author (mainly playwright).

Lope used to be a first name, I guess, though now is obsolete.

Lope => Lopez (son of Lope)
Rodrigo => Rodriguez (son of Rodrigo)
Martin => Martinez (son of Martin)
etc....

Now, I have no idea what name could have originated the last name Suarez!

Suárez -> Suero, a somewhat common given name in the 15th and 16th centuries.

As for the connection between Sephardic jews and surnames ending in 'ez', I too have heard of a similar relationship. The unvalidated story, as I was told, was that conversos tended to choose the most typical of Spanish surnames to intermix better during the era of "cristianos viejos" and "cristianos nuevos". This being said, I have yet to stumble upon scholary confiramtion of this idea. Although, I have not pursued it deeply.


P.S. Many of MadridMan's legion of fans may not be aware that Pérez is derived from Pero, an old form of Pedro. Remember Pero Pérez? Don Quijote's priest, sounds better than Suero Suárez
