Her proper name is Sofía. But since she's not Spanish (she's Greek, right?) I'm not sure how it's spelled in her native land. Anyone?

The Museo Reina Sofía ("Queen Sofía Museum") is named for her. Yes, I believe she's Greek royalty .. back when they had a royal family in Greece - they don't anymore.

Prince Phillip, who is married to the Queen of England is also of the Greek royal family. I don't think he ever lived a day in Greece!

In spanish it is Sofía. In english or greek I don't know.

She is the daughter of the last greek king, Constantino, and sister of the head of the royal greek family (Paul) now that there is no longer a monarchy in Greece and her father is dead.

When she first came to Spain she didn't speak spanish smile

Here\'s a little information about her ancestors from wikipedia.
----------

Sofia de Grecia y Hannover is the Queen of Spain. She was born in Athens on November 2, 1938, as Sophia, the eldest child of the King of Greece, Paul I (1901-1964) and his queen, Frederika Luise Thyra Victoria Margarita Sophia Olga Cecilia Isabella Christa, Princess of Hanover, Princess of Great Britain and Ireland, Duchess of Brunswick-Lüneburg (1917-1975). Both her parents were descendants of Queen Victoria of Great Britain, and despite her country of birth, her family tree on both sides is almost exclusively German and Danish in origin, the Greek royal house being a cadet branch of the Danish royal family of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksberg.

Princess Sophia spent her childhood in Egypt and South Africa during her family's exile during World War II, returning to Greece in 1946, finishing her education in Germany, and returning home to study pediatrics, music and archeology. She represented Greece in sailing at the 1960 Olympic Games.

-------
Queen Victoria of Britain's numerous progeny were well established in all the Royal Houses of Europe, so her royal descendants are many! wink

Sofia is the sister of King Constantine of Greece. While the monarchy was abolished in Greece, many people still follow their lives through gossip rags.

Actually, both Sofia's family and King Juan Carlos' family lived in exile in the 60's. Some say this is why they got together, not only because of shared strife, but as a way to send a message to their people.

Another interesting tidbit is that when Prince Felipe was studying at Georgetown, his roommate was none other than his cousin, Prince Pavlos of Greece. And King Constantine is godfather to Prince William of Wales.

Booklady has given most of the pertinent information.
King Paul and Queen Frederika had three children: Sofia, Constantino and Irene. Constantino lives in exile in London. Princess Irene divided her time between London and Madrid, where she lives at Zarzuela Palace. She seems to be a retiring lady who is talented in music, and is an activist for world peace.
Infanta Christina's second son, Pablo, is named for King Paul.
Just before his wedding, Juan Carlos was seen with his arm in a sling. It was reported that he had tripped in the Greek palace. No so, he had been practicing judo with his soon-to-be brother-in-law, Constantino.
