Geez! Imagine the poor guards who let the guy escape. Since Devil's Island is no longer in service, they will probably have to serve a ten day suspension without drinking French wine. They'll have to drink the water.

Asterault - Actually chicken describes both sexes. Roosters & hens are the "denominations." It was kind of funny. I can picture the French Foreign Legion battling in some far of spot - under siege - and the commander running up a flag with a chicken on it. That would sure send the wrong message to the enemy.

Espe3: I only glanced at the article once, but I think in the body of the article it explains that for a number of years now, there are "vis à vis" visits allowed, which take place in a small room with NO video surveillance, only "checking in from the outside hallway". Please reread the title of this post, emphasizing the word "STUPID". I'm sure that some French lobby said that taping the visits was an invasion of privacy or some silly ACLU-esque idea...

As for the rooster/chicken...I just say "Le Coq Sportif!"

I can understand you defending Spain, but France. Don't they do just about what they want to around the world (many times at Spain's expense) Yes, yes the US does too, the difference is, we pay for it.
