Some idle musings of mine... Perhaps it's the spirit of the times, with a possible war looming, economic woes and so on, but have the rest of you noticed that there's been a shift in mood on the board of late?
I'm referring to the fact that a number of debates have turned so nasty recently that all debate has been rendered almost impossible.
Of course debate is a very healthy thing, and it's great to share points of view. I even enjoy arguing with people, in a civilized manner, who have opinions totally opposed to my own, so I'm not suggesting some topics are best avoided, although I doubt there's going to be much meeting of minds in a debate conducted on the internet. Face to face over a few beers would be better.
What I do feel is that threads which would have aroused little controversy a year ago, such as PIM's innocent question if anyone had gone to gay pride, now seem to generate cyber warfare.
Perhaps we all should try to adhere to some code of conduct, for example, stick firmly to the topic. Then if we disagree with someone, address only the points we disagree with and not introduce red herrings.
We have, thanks to Madridman, a fun little community here. I'm sure we can all have wonderfully varied opinions on everything under the sun, but debate them in a friendly, good-natured and respectful way.
Now, about gay anti-American members of ETA who want to get married to get a green card...

I don't know what all the hub-bub is about...we go through this about every five months...we're all posting on things Spain-related and then someone blows up a car and a kid in Andalucía, everyone posts their frustrations and hatred for ETA, then we "debate" a while, (no one argues that killing is right, so we must all agree...not sure where the debate is there), then someone takes things personal, MadridMan shuts down the topic, and we move on...until the next car bomb.

I look at it this way: "There must needs be opposition in all things." If we didn't know conflict [posts on car bombs], we wouldn't appreciate the confluence [Asturias post]. We can disagree in one thread and then agree wholeheartedly in another. I would never think to take things personally on this board...life is too short, and with the exception of about five you, I couldn't pick you out of a crowd of two. I'm curious about your opinions, but when the day is done, I'll share a paella with you, not thirst for your blood (well, maybe your blood sausage [morcilla])!

Frankly, there are very few things that I discuss with any deep conviction and passion. Spain is one, Euskadi another, and hockey still another. Outside of that, I just enjoy different opinions...whether or not there's money in my bank account or if my government is planning an attack on another.

Let's let MadridMan moderate...as he has been doing so effectively for years...and keep up the interchange of opinions. And as someone has already posted months ago, please just post, don't take everything as a personal attack!

CaliBasco [Who plans to "lighten up" tonight with some paella, lamb and good Basque music...if you're in Chino, CA tonight, e-mail me and I'll give you directions!]

Barry,

I don't believe we really fight. Actually it's more along the lines of "heated debate." If you watch the countdown to an election in the US, you can see a lot worse things said by Democrats against Republicans, and vice-versa.

You also have to remember that CaliBasco and I feel strongly about Basque Country, and Cooter is very knowledgeable about Spain, and particular, the history of the Basques. He may not agree with Cali and I at times, but we forgive him - :p !

Heck! We even forgive AnchovyFront for being a Brit, living in the South of Spain, and causing British Marines to land on the wrong beach while practicing invasions. rolleyes

The only one we have problems with is Toddy, because he never voices his opinion on anything - laugh wink

I agree Wolf, and heated debate can be very constructive. I'm the first one to enjoy a good brawl. I was just pointing out that lately the heat has gone, perhaps, thermonuclear, and that there wasn't much debate! Maybe it's just me being sensitive. Now that would be a first...

Valid points one and all. smile

Perhaps the next heated debate calls for a mass exodus to Madrid so we can all meet face to face, share a paella, raise a glass of wine and enjoy the many opinions shared here. Communicating is easier face to face at times ....

Besides - any excuse to go to Spain is a good one wink

Exactly, Puna! Maybe then many would drop the many assumptions that develop on message boards. The amount of "projection" that occurs in these Internet environments is incredible. Sit people face to face, give them good drink and good food, and rational people are capable of mature discussion and conversation.

Barry,

No problem on a meeting place. We'd let Puna decide, then we'd all pile on a train, head down to Anchovy's and sack out there. It's kind of a "gathering place." You could call it a flop house if you'd like - wink Puna and I already have dibs on the couch, and the master bedroom. Anchovy puts his Mom out on the lawn in a tent when we show up, and makes one of his kids sleep outside on a lawn chair----- eek

Brilliant, Wolf! wink What a way to get an invite!

Anchovy,
As the superb host you are - Wolf and I will forego any and all arguements on couch vs. extra bedroom. We can swap places every few days. :p

As I recall, there's a great hostel in the square that would be ideal for participating board members - perhaps you could arrange a package deal with the owner? (If I post the name of said hostel - can I get credit w/ the owner as their public relations person? Same old stuff - any way to work legally in Spain wink )

You and Mrs. Front will be happy to know that all board members will behave properly in public and promise to not be an embarrassement to the Front family tradition!

Chill the manzanilla - I'll bring Black Dog t-shirts for all your pals!

I had a MadridMan Epiphany this weekend as I was shaking hands with the opposing team after our ice hockey game.

I spent the third period dishing out hits and taking cheap shots...even landing in the sin bin, two for slashing [I was framed], but still shook hands, told all the other guys "you earned it" and "good job"...heck, I would've gone to dinner with them had they invited me.

My point is that Wolf is right, heated debate is fine, and I don't [try not to] take any other opinions as personal. Heck, for most of us, if we ever [heaven forbid] drop off the message board, no one will notice after a while, and we won't know the difference either.

The bottom line is, we're all here now, and healthy...er...heated debate is fine with me, as it looks to be with all of you.

Please pass the paella. wink

What's a gate crasher, Lizzee? That's based on the fact that a few of us have shifted the host family around to accomodate us wink
Seriously - gate crashing is perfectly acceptable - 'specially when we all probably lurked (gate crashed) on MM for weeks or months before posting the first time. smile

Hi lizzie... gatecrashers most welcome! I've got no choice anyway. :p I agree about the beer... must admit San Miguel, whilst hitting the spot, is not my favourite - but I couldn't make a joke about Saint Mahou being in the fridge! wink

Pool's close enough to roll into, Wolf, so need for tears or....whatever! eek Oh and the couch is a very big one, too wink

MM must be on holiday to let this one go so long without the big stick coming out!! laugh

It's nice to see the love of Damm beer. Every time I see Damm beer I think, "Damm beer!" I see the Damm beer trucks delivering Damm beer to all the Damm beer vendors and Damm beer drinkers around and think, "that's a lot of Damm beer!" One time a Damm beer truck came close to hitting me on my bicycle and I screamed [in English] "DAMM BEER TRUCK!" When I screamed at the Damm beer truck, the Damm beer truck driver apologized for his Damm driving. I thought "that was Damm nice of him." I'll close this Damm post now before you all get so Damm tired of this Damm post that I'm Damm-ed from posting on this Damm thread again. rolleyes

CaliBasco [Who actually has never had a Damm beer but has enough Casera and mosto in his system to make a Damm burst]

I really haven't noticed any strange new vibes on the board at all. It's just that whenever someone writes, the reader is putting his or her own emotion into it. THAT'S ALL. If others have noticed a different vibe, so be it.

If MadridMan has had to close discussions, it is certainly his choice, but when we come to this board and think that we are going to join into a discussion that won't take a turn for the worse, it is there that we are fooling ourselves.

The world certainly isn't CANDYLAND and is not all gingerbread houses. There are some trolls along the way under the bridges and remember, don't get stuck in molasses swamp.

It depends whether or not people here sense false-sarcasm in the responses towards their posts where there was none in the first place. But if someone tries to be a "drama-queen" just to get attention; has a short-fuse just because they can't handle any kind of criticism or aren't able to get the response they want and WHINE, I automatically ignore them and their posts. I don't allow myself to be dragged into confrontations without my consent.
