Has any one any pointers as to how to find a self catering place for a family to stay in Cantabria during the Summer? Particulary San Vicente de la Barquera or Comillas.

All the information I have managed to find so far is either from brochures where the prices are high, or on the web where I can't find out too much information.

Anyone done the drive from Madrid up to the North cost? I believe it takes about 5-6 hours, but I just wondered what kind of a journey it is. We will be a family of 5 squashed into a hire car, and possibly thinking of stopping overnight somewhere half way.

Hi Jo-Anne!
Your drive Madrid / Santander would take you about 4.5 hours as distance is around 400 kms. But please have time to stop by Burgos with a beautiful Gothic Cathedral and interesting old city. Burgos is more or less in the middle of the way.
For hotels and hostels please have a look in directories like yahoo, as they have some links to interesting places around Cantabria.
Hope you have a wonderfull time in the north of Spain.

I think we will stay overnight at Burgos at least on the way up, and possibly on the way back, it sounds a fasciniting place.

Still not found much in the way of accommodation in either San Vicente de la Barquera or Comillas.

The Cantabria web site is very interesting, and I enjoyed reading it, however it is quite limited in it's info on places to actually stay.

We passed thru San Vicente de la Barquera several times this Spring/Summer on the bus from Santander to Potes (Picos de Europa). If you are driving, you might consider Hostal Picos de Europa in Potes.
