drliu (ALSO from California by the way... Hmmm.... interesting) asked a similar question earlier this month in the "
bartering for hostel/hotel and shopping " thread and pim politely said that "bargaining" was only appropriate at street markets. I'd have to agree with her.
Asking for a price-cut from a half-full (or less) hostel, "more expensive" or not, is kind of like asking the owners to
accept half-a-meal that evening because of the discount they might give you. I wouldn't do it.
Maybe if you were staying for an entire week it
might be permissable to ask for a discount. This, somehow, sounds somewhat reasonable to me.
