When we fax from the U.S. to Spain, we begin with 011 34 then the number. What "prefix" numbers are used when faxing/calling from Spain to the U.S.?

When you fax into Spain after the 34 you just have to dial the fax number you have been given. Just remember that if you are reading a number older than 3 years prefixes are still in the old system, that is 1 for Madrid 3 for Barcelona....The new system just added a 9 in front of it. That is 34 91 XXX XXXX.

Okay, I have that. But what numbers do you use (before the fax number) when faxing TO the U.S. FROM Spain?

I might be wrong, but I think it's just 011 and then 1 (area code) (fax number).

"Countries that are part of the North American Numbering Plan do not require country codes..." (my phone book).

I've just faxed something today and I dialled 00, which is the international code, then 1 for USA, then 210 for Texas and then the number.

Similarly if dialling the United Kingdom for example, you would dial 00 then 44, for UK, followed by area code and number.

I am totally embarrased Carole, I read it the other way around. They are right to the US is like any telephone call 00 1 number.

Prepositions in english are not my stronger point obviously,....

Thanks, everyone. We now have two votes for 001 and one vote for 011 (is this a typo?)! It's got to be 001 since from here to Spain is 011.

Your English is fine, Nativo. No problem.

Just to give yet another answer, I never bothered with any zeros and just dialed 1 first.... never had a problem.

Sorry to disagree with you, Your Majesty, but trust me on this one. If you want to dial another country from Spain, you must dial 00, followed by the code for the country, ie USA is 1, followed by area code, followed by the number.

All those in favour say "Aye".......

00 + country code + number. How modest that the US assigns itself as '1'.
