Does anyone know what are the cable or satalitte companies in spain and how much it is monthly to have satalitte or cable tv? What does it offer? Is Canal Plus part of satalitte tv?

Canal+ is to Spain what HBO is to the US. It's a subscription channel that during the day may be available to all, but in the evening is scrambled to those who don't pay. They show the second-run movies and international sporting events.

It's my understanding that with the proliferation of the internet, many of the ISP-type companies are taking advantage of the digital infrastructure to introduce digital TV (and the resultant channels) to Spain. I would have to say that the best TV setup I've witnessed in Spain is in Pamplona, where normal TV subscription picked up RAI-1 and RAI-2 out of Italy, RTL which I believe is German, a Norwegian channel (yikes!), Sky and BBC-1 from England and a couple of CNN channels. This was in addition to "La Una" and "La Dos", Antena 3, TeleMadrid, TeleCinco and ETB-1 and 2 (Euskal Telebista). Since I didn't pay the bills, I don't know if it was cable, but I assume so, as Pamplona and the Basque Country have always been on the "cutting edge" with regards to industry and technology.

P.S.: Worst TV? Valladolid: TVE-1, TVE-2, and Tele 5.

Hi missmadrid,

I guess you are asking about Madrid - there are different cable operators in Spain. Madritel is the cable company in Madrid but it still only covers few places. It's very likely that Madritel doesn't offer their services in your area.

Furthermore, I think you can get more channels if you hire digital satellite TV. Even the internet access they are offering through cable modems is a rip off. They charge you per second of connection or you can choose a flat rate but with a download limit in megabytes.

In my opinion, I would go for a digital satellite TV system. There are two: Canal Satélite Digital and Vía Digital . I think the former offers more channels, including Canal + in one of their offers.

Oops, I forgot to tell also about the digital terrestrial TV: Quiero TV .

Note that you should be able to received several channels for free through a usual analogical satellite system (though everyday channels are moving to the systems where you have to pay).

Regards,

Antonio

I have Via Digital, and am very pleased with it. It offers original soundtracks (i.e. programmes & films made in English but dubbed into Spanish can often be received in the original English) as well as 2 BBC channels (Prime and World). The satellite also carries local tv from half a dozen regions of Spain, and a whole load of audio channels. There are various payment options, depending on which subscription channels you want in addition to the basic package.

Many people down here also have the analogue Sky satellite service from the UK, while Sky's new digital service can also be received, albeit with a much, much larger dish.

Canal+ is available on terrestrial transmitters, but many programmes are scrambled for subscribers.
