I have gone completely mind blank. What are the names of those shoes that everyone has. The ones that are only around 5€ and come in every single colour. The *pijos* alwayss where them in the summer. Kind of like a linen shoe. Anyone know what I'm talking about?!

Espadrilles?

Alpargatas in Spanish. Espadrilles is what we call them in English. Though I wouldn't think of them as "pijo" thing...

If they look like these, then they are alpargatas. These are Alpargatas de Cervera. Very popular in northern Spain too.

i used to buy these slip one shoes with a very very thin sole...i called them zapatillos...i think. My big toe always wore a hole in them....

Pijos may wear them, but so does everyone else--kids, old ladies, working class, upper class--since they are so comfortable and cheap, they are pretty much ubiquitous in the summer. There are a bunch of good alpargaterias on Calle de Toledo south of Plaza Mayor--mostly on the west side, for some reason. Personally I like the modified sandal version with a wedge heel.

i took flamenco dance while living in granada, and when we danced at a festival, they were the "item" of choice to wear around with your flamenco dress before changing into your dance shoes and going on stage
