Spanish guitar (the best in the world) and castañuelas. There are many good stores in Arenal and around the Palacio Real, but they are expensive.
Suerte!

you can buy a cajon at flamenco vive, which is in the opera area. the cajon is used in flamenco, i love that instrument. you can buy guitars and castanets there as well along with other instruments used in flamenco. www.elflamencovive.com

You don't say where you are going in Spain. Every region has its own traditional music, and there are often specific instruments associated with it. For instance, Galicia in the north west is Celtic and has celtic music, including the use of the "gaita" (bagpipes). Flamenco is from Andalucia. Try Granada and Cordoba for flamenco guitars (castanets by the way and not much used in flamenco). Still in Andalucia, in the province of Malaga there is a music known as "los verdiales", which includes the use of the violin, and a unique item known as a Zambomba.
The point is, there are lots of "Spanish" instruments - it depends on the region you're in.

Anyone intrested in seeing and hearing something of the variety of folk music in Andalucia should check out the site of the Centro Andaluz de Flamenco (http://caf.cica.es/ - it's in Spanish).

In particlular, this page http://caf.cica.es/mundo_flamenco/flamcd/c/2.htm

has real-time videos and recordings showing many musical forms including fandangos, tanguillas, sevillanas, verdiales etc. It shows something of the variety of instruments used. And, of course, the music is accompanied by the most beautiful, sensuous folk-dancing in the world (IMHO!).

Thank you so much everyone !!

Actually, we'll be going to the south of Spain (mostly). We be a few days in Madrid, one in Valence, two in Granada, 4 in Séville, 1 in Cordoba, 1 in Caceres and Segovie and Tolède one also...

Missmadrid... are you talking about the small guitar wich is round and called a banjo in French ?

And when we talk about expensive (I know it depend upon the quality) but for let's say a nice little guitar used in flamenco, are we talking 100$, 200$, 500$ (or 100 000 pts, 300 000pts)?

Thanks again

ps does anyone knows a spanish music store with a web site ?

Hi missmadrid - glad you liked it! I wish there was more stuff like that around. I love flamenco.

You dance flamenco? I guess you must have classes for it where you live, right? I learned Sevillanas once, but where I live now there are no Spanish dance classes. I really miss it. Anyone else ever try it? (I guess I should maybe start a thread on this, rather than ask the question here).

Yes Boqueron i am a flamenco dancer, my flamenco instructor is "clarita" or "La Clara" she lived in sevilla for 10 years from 1980 to 1990. she is wonderful and posseses every aspect of flamenco i love. I have been dancing since last year and i am fully enjoying it. I feel the passion flamenco has and understand it for what it is, i really really enjoy it. when i move to spain i hope to study more there and improve my technique. If i really want to dance flamenco, i have to learn how to dance with the big boys!
