CIEE

In cooperation with the Junta de Andalucía, CIEE has developed a Language and Culture Assistant Program in public bilingual schools in the Autonomous Region of Andalusia. The program was initiated to make education in Spain both multilingual and multicultural, thus helping to develop cultural understanding between the citizens of Spain and the United States.

Program participants have the opportunity to learn more about Spanish language and culture while providing Spanish students and teachers of English an opportunity to broaden and increase their knowledge of the English language and American culture through interaction with native speakers.

Placement assignments are in rural areas, towns, and cities in the Autonomous Region of Andalusia. Program participants work under the supervision and guidance of a classroom teacher and have a teaching load of 12 hours per week.

Assistants help teachers in English language and culture classes as native speakers and experts on the U.S. in order to stimulate the students' interests in subjects such as social studies, art, and music. Assistants may work with small groups of students to develop speaking, listening, reading, writing skills, and cultural understanding. They also teach English language to school staff. Assistants do not undertake formal class teaching nor are they responsible for the discipline or supervision of students.

Assistants and the classroom teacher (or the school representatives) may agree upon other activities and responsibilities they should be involved in, including attending faculty meetings, making presentations in classes, and participating in extra-curricular activities such as workshops, field trips, music and theater performances, sporting events, international day, English language clubs, and more.

CIEE - TEACH ENGLISH IN SPAIN

Good luck,

Shawn

In looking at this program more closely, I noted that one of their requirements is that you have been out of school seven years or less. So unfortunately, those of us who are older and might have had interest in the program do not seem to be eligible.

arthurg,

That's the one drawback. People who would be perfect for the program would be ineligible. Still, one should inquire if one meets the other requirements.

There is a similar program for Brits

The MEC (Ministry of Education and Science) of Spain which sponsors the North American Language and Culture Assistants program also has a similar arrangement with the UK, Ireland, France, Germany, and Belgium (possibly other countries, too).
