We just came back from 2 weeks in Madrid. Have to tell you all about a great restaurant we found our last night. RESTAURANTE TABERNA at Plaza de Santa Anna, 3... had the BEST food we had the whole trip. The croquetes were unique, the grilled asparagus was perfect, the ox tail was HUGE, the calamari was fresh, and the flan was yummy. It was pricey though... we fed a young family of 5 for about 12000 pts.

Also, Gino's Italian Restaurant (can't remember where it was, but I'm sure it's listed) was great bang for your buck. The italian food was savory and price was great. They even had kids' meals that weren't junk. The dessert there was so-o-o-o good, I wanted one of everything!

Some advice... unless you're in a fine restaurant, don't order the baked/fried chicken. It's probably on the list for Americans and it may or may not be good. We learned the hard way.

Also, make sure you're eating meals at SPAIN time to get fresh food. We couldn't figure out why our meals were so crappy the first few days. Found out that having dinner at 7:00pm meant we were eating leftovers from lunch. Dinner in Madrid doesn't start until 9-9:30pm.
