I'd like to take a day trip from Barcelona and would like recommendations. I've heard Montserrat is a good day trip, but are there any other recommendations?

I've heard that Sitges is good too (is that how you spell it?). I went to Barcelona in December but didn't go on any day trips. smile

Montserrat is a must. From the tourist info centre in Barcelona you can purchase a package that will include the cost of your metro ticket, train ticket, cable cars, enterance to the museum, and a huge lunch. It is definitly an entire day trip. Leave early. Bring your hiking shoes because they've got some great trails.

Tarragona is supposed to be good too, ancient Roman ruins are there. There is a train, I think it takes 1.5 hours.

Sitges is fine, good for nightlife. Montserrat, yes one should see it. Tarragona is very interesting and a really nice city.

I suggest Poblet monastery as well. Trains to all sites are easy.

Girona is well worth a visit, it's a lovely town. If you find that you don't need the whole day, there are enough trains to come back to Barcelona when you want.

Don't miss Parc Guell: a Gaudi spectacular in Barcelona itself. July 22, we spent Sunday afternoon there after dining at Fresco (which I recommend highly - fixed price (ESP 1.395) vegetarian buffet includes a drink and dessert). Get there early! They open at 13:00 and by the time we left there was a queue outside the door waiting to get in. They also have a meat dish and pizza on their other buffet line. eek

As for Parc Guell - there's a Gaudi museum there and it's worth at least a half day. You can get there by Barcelona city bus. :p
