If any of you saw the special they had on PBS "going places" on Madrid i haven't been able to find where that convent is that sells the bakery goods. The one you have to go inside the convent and purchase it, but you can't see the nuns, cause they are forbidden from seeing outsiders. If any of you know where it is i would love to know, i want to go there. Thanks!!!!!

Hi missmadrid,

You can find the addresses of these convents at my site. Check out the updates section: http://www.chelo.com/updates.html.en

By the way, I haven't had time to keep my updates. My idea is to post the most interesting things for tourists there.

Regards,

Antonio

PS: Some time ago, those nuns published a book with all the recipes to cook such delicious things, but I don't remember the name. Try to get it when you come to Madrid.

Hi Miss Madrid,

I saw that as well on PBS. It was back last fall right?

I thought that the "Going Places" tour through Madrid was very poor. Didn't you?

It was more about the characters and their interests than a broad representation of the city's appeal.

Loretta

ya i didn't like it either the couple they had touring madrid and toledo irritated me so much. I was like man, send me over there, i'll show you real madrid!!! but the convent thing i was so unaware of it. And the sevilla thing was poor, i think the people they sent could have been chosen better.

Hi missmadrid98! I'm watching the PBS (public television) program Going Places: Madrid video now! (available in the Video/Cities/Madrid section of MadridMan's ALL Spain Market )

The name of the convent is Convento de las Carboneras (17th century) and is located more or less near the Plaza mayor at Iglesia Monasterio del Corpus Christi "Las Carboneras", Plaza del Conde de Miranda, 3 (address provided by Antonio). The woman bought 1 kilo de galletas for mil pesetas (1000 pesetas = $5.45 US).

PBS contacted me to give them a quote of things to do/see in Madrid and you can read this at Going Places: Madrid in the "Insider's Guide" section.

They also visit Toledo, Sevilla, and Segovia.

Loretta, you're right. The program isn't particularly good. That is to say, the "guides" are not experienced travelers and are all of the younger set, but this does give you an idea how a 'real person' might get along in Madrid/Spain. Lots of mispronunciations on the part of the narrator (says "CHEREZ" for Jerez in Andalucía and "madrilenos" for madrileños) and guides. The video itself, for the things you see, is a little more unusual and insightful than I've seen on other spotlight-Madrid travel shows.

The couple complains that there are no sidewalks in Toledo as they drive through the narrow streets, including one that their car BARELY passes through. The best part of the lengthy Toledo section is when a historian walks them around the city and enlightens our newby guides and us too!

Our latina (from Los Angeles) guide takes the AVE bullet train to Sevilla (and Jerez), takes part in a flamenco school (remember this missmadrid98??) instructed by.... AN ENGLISHMAN(????) and we see a flamenco 'show'. She also takes a horse/buggy ride through the city & Plaza de España. This portion isn't very enlightening, but the visuals are stunning. Aaaaahh.. ¡Sevilla!

The Segovia section features the same guides who went to Toledo. They're marvelling at the Aquaducto and about to have cochinillo at El Candido. They learn how to cut the roast suckling pig with a plate in an EMPTY restaurant. From the light outside it looks to be about noon. Finally, they visit the Alcazar.

I collect videos like these so I'm happy to have it and to see my Madrid whenever I like - LIKE NOW!

Dreaming of Spain tonight,

MadridMan

Guides that don't even pronounce things right should be burned! I hate that!

"- Hey lets make a video about Spain!
- Right!
- Anyone speak Spanish?
- Nope.
- Can we find someone who speaks Spanish?
- Well, there are millions of them here in the US, but hey, why bother?
- So we just use a pronunciation guide to get names right?
- Forget that nerd stuff! - Just film a few bulls, some old geezers in bar, and a chick in a flamenco dress. Oh and dub on some guitar music for that authentic touch!"

We get junk like this in the UK too. In one program, some TV guy's in a bodega in Malaga (El Pimpi, if you know it). He's gonna try the local wine. He doesn't understand a word the camarero's saying, and he tries one. Good grief - It's sweet! What a shock! It's made with the Pedro Ximenez grape, dork! What's it gonna taste like? Chardonnay?

!Me cago en la leche de su puta madre!

(End of rant. Please continue this thread).

ya i would have to agree with all the posts once again!! I could feel madridman's frustration just by reading his response. The couple driving in Toledo was so irritating it became hilarious watching them trying to drive in Toledo, Okay now, who drives in Toledo people, they were acting like they were touring and an american city, you don't see cities like that in spain, you park the car and walk! oh my goodness i could go on and on and on. The flamenco class in sevilla was dissapointing, they could have found several spanish flamenco dancers & teachers, especialy in sevilla. But the part that really bugged me (gee i'm not venting) is the couple that goes into the museum of the relics of the past saints and martyrs and the girl is like freaking out because of the stuff, (is that like a skull i think that is a skull...) i was like oh my goodness get over it. anyways it's good to vent to peope who understand why that video was frustrating, my friends were like what i don't get it what you mean.... anyways VIVA ESPANA!!

I wonder what the hell has all these posts to do with Bakery in convent?.

Madridman, why don't you move all these messages to a new thread called "Bad TV programmes about Spain" or something like that?

Come on people, don't go off topic!!

Regards,

Antonio

Chill, Antonio. hehehee... Threads tend to "stretch" from one thing to another, often far from its original intention. It's fine. The convent bakery was part of this program we're all talking about.

Okay. Here we go. This particular convent bakes things and people buy them. Convents are good. Baked goods are good.

Say, did you ever notice how there are all those storks on the tops of towers? And, while we're talking about storks, has anyone ever actually taken one of those little row boats out on the estanque in Retiro Park? And speaking of Retiro Park, is it safe for women to go to the bullfights in Madrid? heheheheehee... Hahahahahahaaa...

Ummm.. convents are good and so are their baked goods. THERE! Full-circle!

hehehee, MadridMan

While you were going off topic, I have found out more information about convent pastries.

At El Torno Joaquín María López, 28 (91 543 38 00) you can buy pastries from more than 40 convents throughout Spain.

There is another shop like this in Madrid but I'm not sure about the address. I think it's at calle Factor. Does anyone know about it?.

Regards,

Antonio

PS: BTW, there is another shop in Seville as well.
