There are three public transportation possibilities if I recall correctly

- "Normal" bus. This is a line of the Madrid bus system and it will take from the airport to a near subway station. 145 pesetas one trip not very recommended if you are going to the center.

- Airport Express bus, signs are easily recognisable on the arrival exit door. It will go up to Colon Plaza right in the center, price in the year 2000 was 385 pesetas.

-My choice will be taking the subway right from terminal 2, just follow the signs "METRO". My suggestion will be buying a 10 trip ticket (Metrobús = 760 pesetas)and it will cost only 60% of the one-trip ticket nad you can use in all subway and bus networks within the city.

Joe- If you don't have a lot of baggage, take the metro. It's cheap, and you'll get to where you want to go, learning how to navegate the metro right off the bat.
