Hi, people. I just found this cool site. I plan to go to Spain for the first time this January w/ my friends. Couple questions about RENFE train: if we buy a ticket can we get off at any station in-between and then contine on several days later using the same ticket? The grand plan is to get off in Zaragoza between Barcelona and Madrid. Also, does RENFE have student or youth discount?

No, you can't get off at any station. If you buy a ticket from Madrid to Barcelona it will say "Madrid - Barcelona / train # date, time". If you got off at Zaragoza, you couldn't get on again later since your ticket is only valid for an specific train on a given date and time.

However, you could buy a round trip ticket Madrid - Zaragoza and another one Zaragoza - Barcelona.

As for the discounts, you get 20% discount with the Carnet Joven ( Euro < 26 ). You can also get discount using the Explorer rail and the Eurorail passes.

A one-way ticket on Spanair from Madrid to Barcelona is about 30 euro plus about 5 euro tax.

Go to www.iberia.com. I typed in the date you want to fly one way from Madrid to Barcelona and the cost is 33.45 Euros or approx $38 US dollars. Flight takes 1hr and 10 minutes. Beats the travel time and cost by train.

If you get an E-ticket it is even cheaper, 4 Euros less.
