accents markings on a laptop computer - 04/28/04 01:18 AM

This is probably a ridiculous question, but please bare with me and keep in mind that Im awful with tech stuff haha. rolleyes

I used to have a desktop computer, so to use accent marks, etc, I would key in the combos like alt164, etc using the number pad on the right side of my keyboard. I'm really familiar with those, so thats not what im asking.

Heres the problem: I just got a new laptop computer and unlike my old desktop computer, it doesnt have the number pad, just the numbers listed like normal across the top of the keyboard. Soooo, I havent been able to figure out how to do the accents and such, I tried number lock but it didnt seem to work. This is kinda a problem, because I need them to write emails, papers, you name it smile

Anybody out there know?

Hi Kelly,
It's ok. I've done the same thing for a long time until someone told me that I could change my keyboard settings.
Go to "tools" (I'm using IE), then Ïnternet Options", then in the "general" tab, on the bottom you will see "Languages", click on that. then click "add"and look for "English (United States)[en-us]" and click ok. That's it wink
Now to use it, hold the right ALT key and hit the letter you want to have the accent over it. And you will see some other changes, like using " and ', you have to use the enter key after using " for it to show on the screen. Anyway, any questions, just ask and I will say to you what I know. laugh
suerte

To do this more generally (ouside IE) do

Start>Settings>Control Panel>Keyboard>Language.
Click Add and select Spanish (Traditional)

The Spanish keyboard will be added to your keyboard list on the bar at the bottom of the secreen (should show "En" normally). Click on that to select the Spanish Keyboard (which will always be available).

Then
Accents, ' + vowel (á, í etc)
¿, use +
¡, use =
ñ, use ;

Yeah, it's great, but does anyone know how you can printout a layout of the Spanish keyboard so you know what you're hitting?

You are AWESOME, El Boqueron! I had given up on accents and ñ on my laptop. Because I would have to put on the Number lock whenever I wanted an accent, then I would forget to take Number ock off and I'd get a royal mess! rolleyes laugh

Mil Gracias to you and to the member asking this important question! Cheers!

Just as another possible option, I can suggest Spanish type it which is a pretty good site I use when I am on my laptop...
