Translations - price per word?? - 03/14/10 01:17 PM

Hi All!

I have a question regarding translations - I did a quick search to see if anyone had posted on this topic before, and I didn't see what I was looking for - so sorry to post again if there already is an answer!

I was wondering how much is an 'appropriate' price per word for doing Spanish - English translations? I've done some research and have found anywhere from 0.02 cents/word to 0.15 cents/word. I do understand that it depends on the length of the document, the difficulty of the text, the time required for the finished document/rushed docs, etc. But I was just hoping someone who is currently working as a translator could give me a good solid figure for what is an acceptable rate in Madrid now (March 2010)? Also, what do you charge if you bill the client directly and what do you accept if you get the work from a translation agency? If taking on the work from an agency, is 0.045 cents/word a decent price?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

Best regards!

I understand that prices charged to final clients normally range from 8-15 cents per word. Specialists and rush jobs might be toward the higher end of the range. Generalist work, large documents, and regular clients might tend to be charged prices near the bottom of this range. I have never worked with agencies, but have heard that they pay half the rate charged to clients... Let us know what you decide to do and good luck!

Hi Val!

Thanks for your help. I'm still waiting for confirmation on this translation, but I'll be sure and post news when I hear something.

Happy Semana Santa to everyone!
