denim & khaki - 01/02/05 03:53 PM
Denim & khaki are accepted here in Texas for almost anyplace for men or women, even with ties and heavy jewelry. Are they accepted in Spain for non-formal wear? Would it be rude to wear them into a cathedral?
I wore Levis all over Spain last year the only thing that was said was "Gracias senior" when I paid my check, or hotel bill.

If you like to dress up to go out, you definitely should in Spain, you'll fit right in. Spanish ladies of all ages like to dress well to go out.

Well I thought it was a good idea.
I would be willing to give some honest and constructive critisism.
After all what else would you expect from a 52 year old American male.

Spanish women, one may safely generalize, are elegant women. My 16 year old son made the comment to me that what he liked about Spanish girls and women was that they were always nicely dressed.I asked him to explain and he responded that they never looked like they came out of a Cabelas catalog, or out of a Unisex store.
They do wear jeans, but, if they do, you can bet that they are very tight and it complements their looks. That is the key to their fashion arsenal. They wear items that make them look fantastic, or they do not wear them at all.
They dress up the top with a scarf. Impossibly high heels are often worn by the younger women.
The one item you must carry are scarfs, this is the most seen item in the Spanish woman's arsenal of looking elegant. You will fit right in anywhere with the right scarf!

And JUST what is wrong with Cebals? I agree with you and your son Booklady the Spanish women do get dressed just to go to the corner pharmacy. That is a sign of the times and an improved economy. When I was there in the early 70s some of them looked like they had been shot out of a cannon through a Good Will store. My wife commented that they always looked nice at any hour of the day or night, when we were there last year.

i forgot to ask, what's the weather like in September, i'm going in the first week of September. i'm guesssing i'll need a light jacket/sweater at night? also what are the swimsuit styles for the beach? i like to wear practically nothing for a swimsuit, lol (my Mom says all my swimsuits look like 3 handkerchiefs if that much), so i'm guessing i should be fine, lol.

I would have to say that the best dressed women in spain are in sevilla. The thing is that they accessorize. in granada think "rasta" since many young women sport dreds think hippie. In barcelona think urban chic. In madrid. Madrid is a little tough. There are many styles, think grunge, professional, classic, preppy,to jeans with puma sneakers. Khakis in spain are out. I don't remeber seeing any spanish man or woman in khaki's,. You are more likely to see a german or a brit in khaki's. I hate khakis. In the us it bacame the uniform of the dot com generation. Damn I miss those spanish women! check out
