Gifts from Spain - 03/02/01 09:33 AM

I am struggling with the idea of what to purchase for my family and friends. Can anyone give me some ideas? Thanks in advance.

Leather goods. Ceramics (especially plates) are popular and can be wrapped in clothes and taken on your carry-on luggage; items from the Prado or Reina Sofia museum shops; my mother likes getting fancy fans.

Food is also great and inexpensive...My family loves the honey from Spain, piquillos (red piquillo peppers), cheese, wine, olives, olive oil..These are all great options as long as they are sealed and transportable...

Lots of the food items are in glass jars, making it hard to buy lots. But some of the olives are in sealed heavy plastic containers. If anyone likes cooking risotto or other dishes that call for saffron, that is light and expensive to be an impressive gift!

I'd suggest damascene jewelry (especially earrings and pins) for the gals. And be sure to treat yourself to a Lladro figurine!!

I would say mantones, camper shoes, shirts from Piel de Toro or Matador, jewelry, purses or sunglasses from Tous, and if you like designer take a walk on C/Serrano. Prada for instance is cheaper in Madrid than in the US. www.camper.com www.tous.es www.pieldetoro.com
