Anniversary Meal in Madrid - 07/18/04 11:59 AM

My partner and I are going on holiday to Madrid at the beginning of September (Aug 31 - Sept 5 to be exact), we will be celebrating our wedding anniversary while we are there. Can anyone recommend a 'special' restaurant for an anniversary meal that caters for vegetarians (as well as carnivores). We can afford to pay about 90 Euros for the meal. something a bit special with atmosphere. Any help is much appreciated.

El Cosaco in Plaza de la Paja. But, please, before you go read a little bit on what Plaza de la Paja is, or better, was.

From Yahoo Travel

Overview of Plaza de la Paja
A remainder of medieval Madrid, it's name comes from its use at that time. This was the square where the Bishop auctioned off the straw (paja) brought from his farmland near Plasencia in the province of Cáceres. You'll find the Capilla del Obispo (Bishop's Chapel) in the next door Plaza de los Carros. Have a look at its outstanding altarpiece, tombs and doors. A stage is set up in Plaza de la Paja during the Paloma festival where people dance in the traditional madrileño style called chotis. There are some good bars and an excellent Russian restaurant (El Cosaco) round here.

Hi!, El Cosaco is a Russian restaurant. Here are a couple of other options:

La Galette: Conde de Aranda, 11. +34 91 5760641. Metro: Retiro

(Quote)
"Its interior decor and atmosphere is a successful attempt to recreate the High Romantic period with its candlelight and baroque music. It certainly brings in a sophisticated clientele in their 30s and 40s. This restaurant offers an interesting vegetarian menu with a few meat dishes for the less orthodox. The salads and rice dishes are excellent and the famous house specialities are Austrian desserts and apple croquettes. There's another branch on Bárbara de Braganza, 10." (www.casaescondida.net)

or

Maldeamores: Don Pedro, 6. +34 91 3665500. Metro: La Latina. Average price: 40 euros

"You'll find this sophisticated, intimate and attractively decorated restaurant hidden away in a quiet corner of the old town. It's an ideal place for courting couples to share a romantic meal. Its Argentine owners have opted for a menu featuring pasta dishes, salads and rich French sauces. The house speciality is magret of duck with a dressing of balsamic vinegar, brandy and honey. Strangely enough the kitchen serves up sushi as well. There's a good selection of wines and beers to choose from."

Enjoy! smile

Yes, I also read that on Yahoo and it is nice that you put it here Arturo but there is much more to that square than what Yahoo says.
