Madrid/BCN Opera tickets?

I am considering going to Barcelona and Madrid to attend the opera in their beautiful theaters. Barcelona has already offered me tickets. Madrid on the other hand seems to require waiting until 2 weeks prior to performance date. Does anyone know the procedure for buying tickets in advance and just how difficult it is to buy a ticket. It would be a shame to go all that way and not be able to get in. Thanks
