Madrid:World Cup-where to watch? - 05/29/02 07:31 AM

People!,

I'll be in Madrid for the Jubilee Bank Holiday, any good pub to watch the match? ie. with ex-pats that do not take it upon themselves to sing racist/xenophobic songs and can't help mentioning the war...

The Eng v Sweden match that is. Preferably near the centro or Moncloa

And then watch the Spanish one

Most grateful

There's a great Swedish pub just down the street from the presidential palace. I think the name of it is "Jurgetten jür Arse Kikküd byda Svenskas". :p

Hi there!

There are many nice Irish pubs in the center of Madrid where I'm 99% sure you'd be able to watch what we call 'El Mundial' AND meet many fellow Brits doing exactly that. Two of the nicest are: O'Neill's (yep, like the ones in London, but this one's bigger), on calle Principe 12, tel: 915212030; and Kitty O'Shea's on calle Alcalį 59, tel: 915754901. (I thought you might want to call them beforehand just in case). There are many more....
Welcome to Madrid and good luck!

You can also try The Quiet Man, my favorite Irish pub, on c/valverde (or maybe it's valarde???) between metros Gran Via and Tribunal (parallel to Fuencarral). They should televise the matches but check just to make sure.

Cali - An interesting suggestion, but I think the English supporters will prefer to give their custom to the old sailing inn Sendemhölm inna Herringbåt. wink

Ooooops! I completely forgot my old time favourite Irish-Spanish pub in Madrid (I also think it's the oldest), La Fontana de Oro, just off la Puerta del Sol, on Victoria St, 1.
I was there two weekends ago and had a blast 'cause the music and the atmosphere were great. laugh

Boqueron: Very good. I've also been the Swedish hooligan bar "Jürgetten jür Någg˙n Näkk˙d"

Wolf, if you see this, I hope you´ll tell those 'Swedish speaking' fellows to keep quiet and if it doesn´t help threaten them with that Scandinavian lefse stuff laugh

We gave you the best man we have (Sven-Göran) and this is what we get back rolleyes wink

Yep, I was just in 'La Fontana de Oro' with another member of the board and they're going to place a big screen to watch the games. The place is so old it "appears" in Benito Perez Galdés' work. Highly recommended!

Aupa! Way to go USA! laugh My wife wasn't that excited about the World Cup win this morning, even though her old flame from high school, Jon O'Brien, got things started for the Yanks.

Nine points in the first round isn't out of the realm of possibility...is it?
