Valladolid: Winery Tours?

Valladolid: Winery Tours? - 11/12/07 09:41 AM

Hi Everyone!

It has been awhile since I last posted, but I guarantee you I am around!

I have a question. My entire family is coming to Spain this December to celebrate Christmas, so we will be doing some touring while they are here. One of our destinations is Valladolid. Does anyone know if any of the wineries in that area give tours and if so, how I can get in touch with them to arrange something?

Thanks so much in advance!

Damián, thanks a million for the links! I hadn't thought about doing the search in Spanish (duh!). I checked a couple out and they seem to be exactly what I was looking for!

I will certainly post back here with whatever we decide to do!

Are you ever in luck. We were in Valladolid last Spring and here are a couple of great recommendations. The Abadia Retuerta Winery has a great tour, a fine tasting room and a wonderful lady who guides you. A second and also fine winery is the Arzuaga Winery. They require reservations, and have a very good restaurant. The wines of both are excellent, taste them all. One last item that I have to mention is a restaurant in Valladolid called El Figon de Recoletos. The finest lamb in all the land. Don't miss it, you won't regret it.
Saludos y buen viaje

Pedmar and Hector thank you very much for your excellent advice.

Hector, I don't know if we will get to Valladolid city. We are going to Rueda for sure as that is where my MIL is from. Can't miss Rueda's white wines. In the event that we do go to the city, I will make a note of the restaurant that you mentioned. Were the tours that you took in English? Unfortunately most of my family, as American as they are wink , doesn't speak Spanish.

Pedmar, seeing as you are a wine enthusiast, is there a winery in the Comunidad de Madrid that you recommend?

Thanks in advance again for your help.

MadridMan, I keep saying over and over, this site is a real gem!

Hi Everyone,

I am back with our impressions on the winery tour.

In the end we took a tour of the Marques de Riscal Bodega in Rueda. It was by pure chance that we were able to tour it due to a huge mistake on my part.

Marques de Riscal has two bodegas, one in Logroño and one in Rueda. I thought I had called the one in Rueda to make tour reservations but unbeknownst to me I had called the Logroño bodega. When we showed up at the bodega in Rueda, they were completely surprised as they don't normally offer tours and aren't really set up to do so. Turns out that the bodega in Logroño is a huge touristic complex complete with hotel, spa, etc. What we saw in Rueda was just a small winery.

The personnel in Rueda, realizing the mistake that I had made, were immediately accomodating and got ahold of the enologist who happened to be on site. He was more than happy to give us the tour (in Spanish, I translated for my family) and then at the end we were able to sample the wines produced there.

It's a small world as the enologist is very good friends with my husband's cousin and was actually going to have dinner with her and her husband that night. Furthermore, it turns out that the personnel working in reception and running the bodega are distant relatives of my husband!

We bought several bottles of wine there for a great discount (and then the family discount on top! wink ).

My family was very very impressed by the accomodating and personal attention that we received (even before the family connection was discovered). There were parts of the bodega that were not accessible by wheelchair but my mother enjoyed the tour all the same.

If anyone has any specific questions about our experience, I would be more than happy to answer them. smile
