Day trip from Madrid to Toledo and El Escorial/Valle de los Caidos - 01/31/07 02:09 PM

A while ago I read about a day trip to Toledo on your own and taking the Oficina de Turismo guided tour.

I searched and cannot find it now. I would appreciate if please share your experience doing this trip on your own.

I am also looking for information on doing the same thing for a day trip to El Escorial and Valle de los Caidos.

Thanks

My wife and I took the bus both to El Escorial and to Toledo (and also Segovia) last May. It was a great way to go. The buses were comfortable, cheap and they generally let you off at better places than do the trains. We used walking tours from the Rick Steves books (our taste) and had a great time, but I suspect any good guidebook will have satisfactory walks.

The buses to El Escorial and Segovia drop you off a very short, nice walk from the places to go. In Toledo, you have to take a local bus (I forget which number) into the historic town, but it's cheap and easy.

well just for you to know i am spanish and have lived in Madrid before for 2 yrs and visit every year since 1989. So i might look easy to me but for buses you go to the bus terminal at calle mendez alvaro 83 tel +34 91 468 42 00 email info@estaciondeautobuses.com
metro atocha just cross over the glorieta de embajadores road. there continental bus co has trips to toledo.also at this bus depot
Estación de autobuses de Toledo. Avda. Castilla la Mancha, s/n. Taquillas 12 y 13
· Continental - Auto. Tlf: 91 527 29 61 | 925 22 36 41

To El Escorial(town san lorenzo del escorial) go to Recoletos cercanias train station near plaza colon and take line C-8a (train line number for Cercanias 8a)
TO go to la Santa Cruz del Valle de los Caidos you first need to be in San Lorenzo del Escorial (where the palace is) and from there take bus 660 at plaza de la virgen de Gracia Autocares Herranz bus company.

if you need to call there on site for directions the phones numbers are +34 91 890 59 02 or 91 890 59 03 for the El Escorial and
tel +34 91 890 56 11 or 91 890 13 98 for el Valle de los Caidos.and
tel +34 92 521 58 50 for Toledo

I want to visit the Valle de los Caidos (never been there before) which I heard it is an impressve place. Does anybody know if buses takes you up to the cross? Is the valle de los caidos too far from El Esocrial?
