Can someone suggest how to get from Salamanca to Portugal - preferably Aveiro - as I want to make that my base for several days.

There's a Eurolines bus http://www.eurolines.es Salamanca-Porto that departs Salamanca at 12:00 and arrives Porto at 17:00 daily (from 8 Jun). It costs 25 Euro 1-way.
