Barcelona Lodging on/near beach?

Hello, this August my adult son and I will be visiting Spain, and spending two nights in Barcelona. We would like to stay in a room with a view of the Mediteranean, if possible, but the guidebooks I've read say that staying near the beach is unsafe. Any tips or suggestions?
