Madrid: Hotel Near Railway Station - 09/02/05 10:49 AM

Hi all,

I am going to stay for a night at Madrid. Probably I will reach there by train from Cordoba at 21:00 and leave next morning at 07:00. So I really don't have a time to visit any place in Madrid. At maximum I can have some walk around at night. Could any one please recommend a hostel near or easily accessible from the train station? It doesn't need to be fancy one with many facilities but should be good enough for a nice sleep, because I will be travelling for next 48 hrs from next morning.

If I have time to visit just one city Cordoba or Madrid, which one should I prefer? Any suggestions will be highly appreciated.

One last question. Is it safe to walk alone in cities and towns of Spain at night?

Assuming you're coming into the Estacion de Atocha (rather than Chamartin), I would recommend the Hostal Barrera . It's about a 5 minute walk up Calle Atocha from the train station and is a comfortable, quiet hostal with a friendly and helpful staff.

As in any big city, Madrid has some areas to avoid walking alone in at night but is, for the most part, safe.

I've stayed a couple of times at the Hotel Agumar (Paseo Reina Cristina). It's a good 4-star place, a very short walk from Atocha renfe and metro. I've got really good last-minute deals (€40-45 per night) using www.ratestogo.com . Look for a room facing away from the street if you like to sleep without air-conditioning.
