Madrid: Hostal Playa - pay when arrive or leave?

Hi have booked for 8 nights hostal playa , 9th aug - 17th aug, but have read some bad reviews here, do we pay when we arrive or leave, as if its bad could we leave earlier and maybe look for somewhere else. First time in madrid wasnt sure of best area to book. Have spent the last week reading this site to get ideas on where to visit, thanks

thanks MadridMan have you been here, if not has anyone else got anything nice to say about it. looks nice on website but after reading other peoples views starting to worry instead of looking forward to it. also is it a good area to stay in for first timers? love the site by the way and good of you to reply. i am coming from birmingham and my partner is comning from dublin

have just come across Hostal San Isidro which is a bit cheaper & maybe a bit more cheerful any comments on this place. they have rooms available, nust do some reseaarch tomorrow.

I have stayed at Playa and would not again, for the reasons stated elsewhere. The San Isidro is nice, but c/Principe can be one of the wildest streets on the weekend nights. Make sure you get an inside room. They have heavy window covers, but on a busy night even those don't help!
