Reviving a Topic: Spanish DVDs in USA - 03/03/06 04:13 PM

Hi...

My wife and I are going to madrid in May. To brush up on my Spanish, we've been watching movies (Spanish with English subtitles). Here's what we've seen so far:

Y Tu Mama Tambien
Butterflies
Habla con Ella
Amores Perros
Todo Sobre Mi Mama
Fresa y Chocolate
Belle Epoque
Women on the Verge...
Pantaleon y Las Visitadores

In our posession but not yet viewed:

La Mala Educacion
Nueve Reinas

So far we have liked everything a lot, so that gives you an idea of our taste.

I open the discussion to further suggestions that we might try.

Thanks

Steve

Take 'La Mala Educación' DVD and throw it in the fire: It is a 'filthy' movie! I think, for filth, it is the worst movie I have ever seen.

"Abre los ojos" is fantastic. Also by the same director is "Mar adentro"--It won the Oscar for best Foreign Language Film last year. You definitely have to see it!

Mar Adentro was great - Javier Bardem is my latest movie star crush (goodbye Keifer Sutherland hello Javier Bardem) - he is so cute and I love his voice :-)

"La Mala Educacion" is brilliant, proving that Almodovar is head and shoulders above any spanish director out there, and any american director, for that matter... If you have the time, listen to Almodovar's commentary, too.
If you want to listen to spanish as it is spoken in spain (as opposed to mexican spanish) watch every movie of his. also - Atame(tie me up/tie me down), Tacones Lejanos(high heels), Law of desire, and Matador. Wonderful movies, great scripts.

I like Almodovar, yet I did not like "Mala Educación". So, I will have to agree with Eddie. The subject of pedophilia really disgusts me.
Almodovar is a fine director. I still think that "Mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervios" and "Hable con Ella" are the best things he's done.
As for being better than any American director, don't discount Martin Scorsese, Robert Altman, Terry Gilliam, Jonathan Demme, Joel Coen, or even Kevin Smith.
