New to Barcelona - 03/03/01 10:38 AM

I Just Moved to Mataro. Ive made some great new friends here, but I am also interested in talking to and meeting English speakers in the area. My Spanish friends arent as awestruck as I am by the beauty around me. It would be cool to meet people who want to explore this country as much as I do. I look forward to hearing from anyone.

Terrapin- are you a Maryland grad? I will be in Barcelona in the first week in June and would love to have someone to explore with. Maybe we can get together and take in some beauty!

May 7 - Aug 7 and hopefully beyond. We should organize a Barcelona pub outing sometime in June. Whats the beer of choice in Spain anyway, I might need to preview it before I go.

The beer I drink in Barcelona I believe is called Estrella Damm. I am a beer drinker and it's pretty good. In Galicia: it's Estrella de Galicia. In Madrid, it's Mahou (de barril - draught) and in Sevilla, it's Cruz Campo; but all over Spain, you can't go wrong with San Miguel (Special Export)

A pub outing works for me! I loved cruz campo. 100 pesetas a glass and I thought it was better than san miguel.

Voll Damm. Gotta go with the Voll Damm, but watch out cause it has a tendency to ruin the next day (7% or something).

Let me know when you all come, I live 15km outside of Barcelona.

Its nice to hear from you all. I would love to meet anyone who is coming this way. My roomate is into partying every weekend, whereas I like to get out & around. Its hard to get out during the day if youre partying till eight in the morning. Im not a Maryland grad, just a little bit of a deadhead. Moving here was my first trip to Spain. Ive only been here about 5 weeks, so I havent gotten to do much(yet).I love it here so far,but I know Ive just touched the tip of the iceberg.Im looking forward to meeting new people to discover Spain with. My apartment is about ten minutes walk from the train station in Mataro, so any new friends could crash there, and we'd have easy access to transportation. Its only about a half hour ride to barcelona. I have a car also, but its cheaper and more convenient to take the train (Its also a lot safer when drunk). Keep in touch.

Re: New to Barcelona - 04/03/01 05:20 AM

Right on, brother. I have a couch with your name on it. One thing thing that sucks here is the lack of good music. Before I piss everyone off, let me say that I love traditional Spanish music. Those guys can work their guitarras like no other. However, the modern music is severely lacking, and there arent any good shows around. Perhaps I am ignorant. Someone please educate me! If there is some good spanish music out there ,I'd love to hear it. All of my Spanish friends dig Estopa, but I cant really get into it. I know some of you Spain afficianados out there can set me straight.

What exactly is May Day, Asterault? Is it a southern holiday? What kind of special celebrations do they have?

I seem to have forgotten about the Gipsy Kings. They are the guys that did the "Hotel California" cover in "The Big Lebowski". They are very good. Paco de Lucia is a very good classical guitarist.

How about Mana? They are pretty good and their music is very popular in Spain. They are actually from Mexico I think. I agree with you on a lot of spainish pop music but I love salsa/ merengue and some of that was just getting popular when I was over there last.

Manu Chao is quite good.

sorry to burst your bubble, but I think the Gypsy Kings are actually French...

Re: New to Barcelona - 04/03/01 08:25 PM

Juan Luis Guerra is one of my favorites. He is from the Dominican Republic, but my andaluz friends tell me his concerts sell out quickly in Spain and his CD's sell well here in Tucson as well. His lyrics are really something!

And there is always Jerry Rivera, Elvis Crespo, Marc Anthony and Luis Miguel (more romantic but good to listen to occasionally). Living in Texas I have grown quite and appreciation for latin music. When we go on that pub crawl I will bring you a mixed cd!

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I'll definitely check them all out. You are correct, Nicole. The Gipsy Kings do indeed hail from France. You owe me a new bubble.
