Faxing from North America

I was trying to send a fax to a hotel in Avila yesterday and had no luck. Maybe I'm a complete idiot, but it should be the same as phoning, right? (I phoned the hotel today successfully, and between my Spanish and the senora's ingles which she said was "pequeno" but pretty good we managed a conversation - sadly, they are closed for vacation when I wanted to book - sigh.) From North America - 0-11-34 (country code for Spain) then the city code if there is one (not for Avila) then the local number. Has any one else had difficulties faxing to Spain before? (It may just be the local number in this case.)

Thanks. I was using "920" as part of the number, so I think the problem must have been with the local number or with the machine at their end.
