Who is Dr. Fleming? - 08/09/03 09:29 PM
Just about every city in Spain that I have visited of any size has a Dr. Fleming Street (Calle de Dr. Fleming).
Who is this Dr. Fleming. We are not talking about Alexander Fleming the guy who discovered penicillan are we?

Think about getting gored by a bull. Think major infection, and "death in the afternoon" -- several weeks after the fight. Penecillin changed the odds -- a lot.

It may no longer be true, but Calle Fleming in Madrid was once a hangout for "painted ladies." I found it amusingly ironic that Madrid had a street where one could acquire a disease made curable by its namesake.
