April Fools' Day - 03/30/11 08:49 AM

Can anyone tell me about whether or not the Spanish world celebrates April Fools' Day or the equivalent? (When it is, what kinds of things people do, etc)

Gracias!

In Spain, this kind of day is called Día de los (Santos) Inocentes and is celebrated on the 28th of December. I also wrote a blog entry about it here. In my blog I commented how my barber played a joke on me, he laughed and I didn't because I didn't realize the (holi)day.

They play the same kinds of jokes as in the USA for April 1st Fool's Day and the media usually joins along as well, announcing oddities and unbelievable things trying to pull people in.

Another great blog! I loved it. Do you still go to the same barber 4 years later?

Thanks, and yes! Same barber. Great guy, just turned 50 years old and a very down-to-earth person.

One of the favourite ones in England is someone says " theres a Mr Lyon been on the phone and wants you to ring him back staightaway"
so you ring back
"Could i speak to Mr lyon please"
reply
"I think you have been April Fooled sir this is Blackpool zoo"

always makes me chukle when i hear that one

Hahahaha I hadn't read that blog before MM ! We used to do that as kids . We'd glue a coin to the pavement ( sidewalk ) outside our house and watch passers by try and pick it up . In all the 6 years I was in Madrid I would always be away in England for a family christmas and would've therefore denied my Spanish and Latino friends the opportunity to "celebrate" Día de los Santos Inocentes on me .
I remember a good friend of mine in the UK using an old fashioned tape recorder taping him shouting "Help ! Let me out , Let me out ! " . He then put the tape recorder running in the boot ( trunk ) of his dad's car by the sidewalk . Apparently there were lots of very distressed passers by trying to help . He still plays tricks on my nieces !
I'd love to hear of other tricks played in Spain or Latin America to continue this thread .

well I am back to April 1 as is done here the same date ,nasty jokes abound. The tax audit is one ::)

Its becoming very international too. Its call here «poisson d'avril» or pescado de Abril or fish of april also known as April fools' day.

However in Spain ,it is done in Dec 28 except Menorca where its April 1 too.
I am prepare to fence off any attackers....tomorrow.

pedmar, I didn't realize Menorca DID celebrate its April 1st too! That's very interesting! Is that because of its history of, what, GERMAN residency? (German??)
