I'd like to purchase dress pants, shirts, and shoes in Madrid. How do prices compare to those in the U.S? How quickly can items be tailored? Do the department stores have a good selection of merchandise? What stores would you recommend?

You have many different prices depending on quality, starting on maybe 20€ for a shirt and 30€ for pants, a suit could cost from 180€ (well, I don't by cloths since last year..)
I like Adolfo Domínguez, although I don't visit it often, I prefer to move around the shops in my neighbourghood. I also like Springfield, quality is a bit worse, although prices and design are OK.
More classic designs you can find in El Corte Inglés or Cortefiel. Other more fashion shops could be Zara, H&M, Pull&Bear, the shops in Fuencarral market....
