You can shop online from the El Corte Ingles website although I'm not sure if olive oil is one of the products they ship overseas.

Manapoli......You are as mad as I am.I've bought olive oil back from Spain on several occasions. Transporting or shipping liquids whether in glass or plastics especially olive oil is not the most sensible thing to do.
However good luck. cool wink

Manapoli - I just caught a show yesterday (2 pm, fyi)on the Food Network which overviewed the foods of Southern Spain. One of the towns highlighted was Jaen, which they say is located in the larget olive producing region in the world! Of course, they boast the best olive oil as well. Surely it must be a better value to buy it at the source, too, as compared to buying it retail? Just a guess. wink

Jaen is just north of Granada, so you should be able to fit it in.

Have a great time! Pookita

Pooky,

I saw it too. I just loved that restaurant where they were making Paella for seventy. My guess is that's somewhere in the vicinity of where Anchovy Front lives but I can't remember the name of the town. Maybe you can, and he can shed some light on it for me.

I also enjoyed the segment on the jamon from the highest village in Spain. That made my mouth water so bad I nearly had to put on one of my granddaughters bibs rolleyes

I ended up grilling a steak, had a nice garden salad, corn on the cob, baked potato, and followed it with blueberries in cream. A nice enough dinner but at that time, I wanted the paella frown

Wolf (Whose paella hunger would eat up that paella for 70.)

Wolf - That clothes hanger/tin foil combo gives you pretty good reception up in them there hills!

I know what you mean about making your mouth water. That paella had my stomach grumbling, too. And, being a big Emeril "Pork Fat" Legasse fan, I love good hams, whether it be Spanish Serrano or Proscuitto from Parma.

I checked the Food TV website to see if they referenced the different locations, but alas, no. It was definitely in a coastal area, and it most likely was in AnchovyFront's "neck of the woods" (Wisconsin slang.) No replay date listed for that episode, either.

Sounds like you are making the most of the bountiful local harvest, though, Wolf! (Did you pick the blueberries yourself?)

Pooky,

Yes, I did pick them myself, on the edge of a field adjacent to our home (we own the woods too.)... wink

I was astonished to see them ripen so early. Usually it's mid-July before you see the wild berries. But they were already ripened, and so are some of the blackberries, which I also picked smile

I got about a quart of each, and it looks like I will be able to go back in a couple of weeks and get at least three more quarts of each... and follow it up with a third picking.

I really got into the blueberries. I squashed up more of them this morning, and whipped them into a pancake mix, and pigged out on blueberry pancakes for breakfast too.
laugh

I tried to find the paella recipe at the website myself, figuring they would give credit to the chef... I couldn't even distinguish one paella dish from another, to figure it out. I ended up sending them an e-mail asking them for the info. Still no answer. frown

Hey! You know your antenna material well! I like that! laugh

Re: Spanish Olive Oil - 06/26/01 10:44 PM

manapoli..In the town of Baena, about 60 kms SE of Cordoba we found a store that sells only olive oil-it appeared to be a cooperative of a number of producers. It sold different size bottles plus large cans, various brands. The store is located on the right side of N432,when driving towards Cordoba, on the north side of town, and just before you leave the town. They had 3 each 1/2 litre bottles in an attractive tough cardboard container. To ship back to US we just placed them in our carry-on. So if you want to tour the countryside...
Based on advertisement in hotel magazine there is a specialist store in Cordoba that carries olives, olive oil, etc. Alas we did not make it there due to overstock of olive oil, and understock of available time.

The best olive oil is from Jaen, but there are other places where it is superb: in general all the south of Spain. Of the places you are going to stay I will try in Seville and Madrid (it's the capital, so you can find everything here).

Where to buy it? I recommend to try in a cooperative of producers. They have the best, most pure, most tasteful and cheapest oil. I've buyed it myself and I can assure you it was like eating fruit. Try to put some olive oil on a toast in which you previously passed a tomato or a garlic, great!

I think I should post somewhere in the message board some spanish food recipes, don't you think? :-P

The Spanish government is having all of the cheapest olive oil which is made from the skin of olives (called orujo) removed from store shelves because of a concern that it might contain carcinogens.
There is absolutely no problem with the better qualities (such as Virgin or Extra Virgen).

Hi, everyone. I just wanted to mention re this topic that I learned on a recent visit to Spain that if buying olive oil to look for a number on the bottle which indicates acidity. You want a low number, definitely a 3 or less! The number 1 indicates Extra Virgin, although some that I purchased are labeled extra virgin and show a number 3, indicating 3% acidity. However, the lower the number the better. Hope this helps! ( I love Pan con Tomate, with the drizzle of good olive oil.)

I's not all that hard to determine the quality of olive oil. Take a sip. If it turns your throat to flame, don't buy it.
