Madrid: Where to buy a Crock Pot??? - 07/26/10 08:36 AM

I want to buy a crock pot for my friend when I get to Madrid as a gift. Any suggestions, do they even exist in Spain??? Since he's been home (in the US) he thinks he would really like to have one...
Thanks for your help....

I am not certain, but I would try El Corte Ingles.

If you're mobile I would recommend Sepulveda, for souvenir clay pots. They're also quite functional

I can't say I've ever seen a crock-pot (a.k.a. "slow cooker") in Spain but they do use stove-top pressure cookers for FAST cooking of normally slow-cooked foods.

I HAVE a crock pot and it´s great ! I bought it in El Corte inglés . It cost about €60 ... really worth the money . Mine is made by the company Kenwood and has very good capacity .

Hello all:

My first post here, and I didn't see a category for new member intros, so I hope I am not breaking any protocol here!

I live in Istanbul and there's certainly no concept of crock pots here, so imagine my delight when I found this thread.... Will definitely buy one... but what is a crock pot called in Spanish?

First up , i´m totally jealous that you are in Istanbul ... I´ve been there many times and I LOVE that city !!!! I think in Spain they just use the the English word " Slow cooker " .. I bought one here in Madrid and I love it !

This has been a confusing topic. In the USA, 'crock pot' and 'slow cooker' are used inter-changeably(is that a word?). They generally refer to an a ceramic lined pot with an outer metal shell that has some sort of electric tube in between the ceramic and metal parts. You can leave the house for work and have dinner cooking and ready by the time you come home.

See www.crockpot.com for a picture.

umm yes, I use both words in english, so which should i be using in spain? :-P Do they not have them after all? I want one, I would really like to spend less time on cooking. And pressure cookers just scare me!!!

Pressure cookers scare me too - visions of the damn thing exploding are just too real! To the best of my knowldege, a crockpot must be plugged into an electrical outlet whereas a pressure cooker can only be used on top of the stove.

So.... does anyone have any good spanish crockpot recipes? :-)

Steve may I ask how much you paid for your crockpot and what you do with it?

Re: Madrid: Where to buy a Crock Pot??? - 09/19/10 01:14 PM

I cook in the crock pot a lot, but my recipes aren't Spanish. (as a matter of fact, I am doing a flank steak in my crock pot right now)

One thing that is easy and delicious is to put a whole chicken in the crock pot for about 8 hours on low and sprinkle it with garlic salt. You can add vegetables, too, but usually I'm in a hurry and it's just the chicken.

Have fun!

Whole chicken.... like not even chopped up? wow, what could be easier? :-)

My better half was trying to talk me out of my purchase tonite, as he doesn't want to carry the weight :-P

I paid about 50 euros .. though it was a couple of years ago so I can´t quite remember exactly . The weight´s not the only issue , it´s the bulk . These are quite big .
I cook things like ratatouille , stews , casseroles etc . You can just throw everything in , turn the cooker on and it´ll do all the work .

After the 8 or so hours, the chicken will fall apart and be in pieces. Steve Robinson is a great cook! His food always sounds yummy!
